You wouldn't even know it's a spin-off

When I first started watching Toaru Kagaku no Railgun I had no idea it was actually a side-story to Toaru Majutsu no Index, and I still haven't watched that one, as I got hooked on Misaka. Honestly, what isn't to like about her? Super cool, a bit of an airhead, super strong, and likes cute things. It's just win after win with her.

But the characters aren't the only saving grace. Whilst the story has some moments where you are unsure why it's there, it definitely isn't a snooze-fest, and does a good job of tying in previous plot points into the current story.

The characters

Throughout the 2 seasons, at the time of writing, we're slowly introduced to the main cast, and everyone who will come to help at the end of each season.

In the first season we are introduced to:
Misaka Mikoto
Shirai Kuroko
Uiharu Kazari
Saten Ruiko

And a few of the important side characters, such as Kongou Mitsuko... and yes, calling her important pains me.

In the second season, we are introduced to who is arguably the most important character... Says MISAKA trying to make herself seem important.

The plot

In all seriousness, whilst I loved the Misaka clones, their facial expressions, and their speech patterns. I honestly thought the second season was a much better season, simply because of the plots.

In the first season there was very few occasions where Misaka had to break a sweat, and the times she did she had constant backup to support her.

In the second season, she tried to shoulder all her burdens herself, and kept on going whilst it was slowly killing her, until she reaches a point where she realises that being one of the strongest in the world is only going to get her so far on its own.

Apart from the final episode of each season, the plots worked very well, and had very few Deus Ex Machina moments, or moments where things were just getting over the top with no real reason.

Aside from that, I am super-looking forward to season 3 at the start of 2020, and can't wait to see what becomes of my favourite derpy clones... and who knows, maybe Kuroko will finally get a hug off Misaka.

It's been a while since I reviewed some anime, and of all the ones I have watched over the past 2 months, it felt fitting that I talk about this one. Especially as it's one I haven't heard anyone talking about, and it being a side-story, don't expect everyone to have thought to watch without watching the parent story.

I will at some point watch Toaru Majutsu no Index, but Toaru Kagaku no Railgun was enough of that story for now. I have last season's anime to catch up on now, starting with Joshikousei no Mudazukai. I caught an episode of it whilst I was in Japan, and it looked interesting, so I couldn't really say no. But that's for another day, until then じゃね!see ya
